What is Surf Apnea and how can it help you while surfing?

Apnea means, not breathing. A matter we all face during a wipe-out.

Free divers practice breath-hold techniques to dive as long as possible on one breath without any oxygen equipment. That’s called Apnea.





Is this the same as the Wim Hof method? 

 No, it’s different. The Wim Hof Method is not meant for underwater. 

Surf Apnea is specifically designed for surfers. 

 

Is Surf Apnea not only practiced by big wave surfers? I have no big wave ambitions, is this workshop for me?

So far, Surf Apnea has only been used by big-wave surfers. However, the training helps those who feel out of breath in the waves no matter how big they are. It’s training to control your body in challenging surf. What is challenging for a beginner is different than what is challenging for someone with 10 years of experience. What you want to control is how you react in heavy surf, what is heavy for you on your level.

 

For whom is this workshop?

Everyone who likes to progress in surfing wants to feel more confident in the water, surfing big or small waves, beginner or advanced.

 

Sometimes the surf literally takes your breath away. If the surf is at the limit of your ability or out of your comfort zone, it’s easy to pull back and not take that wave. This is a pity because usually, your brain is warning you quicker than needed for danger.

Probably you can just take that wave without any problem and if not? What is the deal? You’ll get wiped out? Is that bad? No, not really. In most cases, you are underwater for no longer than 8 seconds. So, where is the fuss about? That is one of the questions many surfers deal with.

When feeling fear, you get out of oxygen pretty fast and that’s why sometimes it feels like you can’t take 8 seconds or the immediate next hold down. Especially if you got already pretty tired from all the paddling.

 

What would you learn in the workshop?

You will learn to know your body. You will learn about the mammalian diving reflex and what happens if you don’t breathe for a while.

You will learn how to read your body and the signals of your body.

You will learn tips and tricks to hold your breath for longer. Last but not least you will practice your longest breath-hold with us.

 

After this workshop, you have built confidence in wipe-outs so, that the next time you go into the water you just take that wave and you will ride it. And if not, discover the great hold down in a whole different perspective.

SURF APNEA 2.0

DYNAMIC SURF APNEA

What is Dynamic Surf Apnea?

As we practiced static apnea in the pool before, you could focus on how to keep your breath longer underwater once you get wiped out.

Now we go a bit closer to reality.

We will repeat a bit of static surf apnea and end up with a practice of multiple hold-downs with wipe-out simulations.

 

Can I attend Surf Apnea 2.0 even if I haven’t done Surf Apnea 1.0?

No, it’s key to first have done Surf Apnea 1.0.

After that, we go deeper into practicing Co2 build-up in the body and short recovery for multiple hold-downs.


I’m a freediver can I attend Dynamic Surf Apnea?

Yes, If you can show at least a pool brevet you can attend this clinic.


I did a Wim Hof Breathing Workshop is this similar?

Wim Hof Breathing Techniques are excellent for stress relief nevertheless it is not recommended underwater.

In 2011, I almost drowned in a surf event. After that surfing was not the same again. I spent years figuring out to get over the fear. I had many different coaches, read many books, and did courses about fear management and how the brain-body mechanism works, NLP, Mental Toughness, Stoïsm, Mastering your Mindset, and breathing exercises. Slowly I found out what was working to get over fear and to progress.

I took the best part of all of them and created a complete program to find out your personal bottleneck where fear is taking over the scene.

And I’m very happy to help many others.

One of the most important things I learned is that fear totally can block your way to gaining more success or reaching the goal you had in mind.



I started my research to get over my own fears in the water. But when I got in-depth to find tools to bash my own fear, I find out that I could use those tools in many other facets of life such as entrepreneurship and as an athlete to win competitions.

Do you want to boost your surf progress?

During the Advanced week, you'll have the chance to get the most out of your surf sessions through daily Surf Fit Training, including breath-hold techniques to better prepare for your next wipe-out. In the Fear Management workshop, you will learn to bash your fear that can get in the way of your progress.

During the week you will not only get advanced surf lessons with a video coaching session, but we will go on a surf safari together to see some other surf spots in the area and further practice what we have learned.

Last but not least, a Surf Food lecture will outline what nutrition can do for you to become a better surfer and how to make sustainable choices in your diet.

For whom?

This week is meant for those who already joined some surf lessons before and would like to boost their surf progression.

It can be for someone who wants to develop his/her surf ambitions to surf bigger waves for instance, but it can also be for someone who calls him/herself a beginner for a little while already and who would like to move to the next level.

For those people who want to get the most out of their surf sessions with the help of supportive training, breath-holding techniques, change of mindset, and the role of food intake.

Program

Surf Fit Training:

Train for an explosive pop-up, increase your paddle power, maintain core stability while paddling, gain mobility in a surf squat and rotation. Includes a Surf Fit workout program to take home.

In the training, we implement apnea training on land to be better prepared for your next wipeout. We use apnea training used by freedivers. This is different from the Wim Hof ​​Method.

 


 

Surf Fearless Workshop:

Master your fear with mindset, neurolinguistic programming, and mental toughness.

In this workshop you will learn how the brain works. Why do we experience fear? Why can we not get rid of it in some situations and how can we trick the mind so that we can overcome long lasting fears. We will teach you how you can train mental toughness to reach a higher goal and train the “fear muscle” in worse case scenarios. Exercises on focus, relaxation and self-hypnosis will round the workshop off. Includes a workbook to make your own script so you can reach your “surf fearless” goals. For people with a fear trauma it is possible to book a one-on-one session.

Surf Food Lecture:

During the lecture, we will outline different diets which fit the individual surfer, based on a surf week of surfing 2 hours two times a week. This includes a typical surf athlete dinner or lunch.

PERSONAL TRAINER / FEAR COACH & SPORTS NUTRITIONIST KIM VAN LEUKEN

Kim has a background as a Vitality Coach and Sports Nutritionist.  At the moment she works as a Personal Trainer in Amsterdam where she helps her clients to reach their sports goals. Recently she started coaching clients who experience fear in the waves, which stops them to progress in the sport. Weekly Kim organizes Surf Fit Workouts for those who are not able to surf on a weekly basis but want to stay surf fit the whole year-round.

About Kim:

About 10 years ago Kim almost drowned during a surf session when she lost her board in waves above her ability. Since then she has been fighting the battle against fear while surfing. After years of researching, she got coached by the world record holder freediving, Dutch lady Nanja van den Broek. Kim was astonished by the result. Educated by her coach she now helps other surfers/athletes to get over their fears and to get closer to their surf goals by practicing mental exercises.

 

Impression

We stay at the amazing Pura Vida Surflodge. Known for their great athmosphere, humble people and high quality surflessons in small groups. The garden of the lodge is like and oasis. Enough space en chill areas for your apres surf. A cozy place with huge pillows at the pool, wooden cubes, hammocks, the bar and of course the huge tables at which all guests meet in the morning to have breakfast together.

Besides one will find a slackline, balance boards, long- and skateboards, table tennis and many more things to get active with at this idyllic playground., with a gorgeous view and swimming pool. The rooms are designed with great taste with a lot of wood and natural elements. The spacious rooms of the Pura Vida Lodge are available for two to six people. Some rooms have their own balcony with hammock. The sturdy beds with comfortable matrasses will give you the sleep you need after a day of surfing. Hygiene is highly important to us, so they clean the shared bathrooms and toilets daily.

De SSI Freediving level 1 bestaat uit 3 onderdelen:

  1. de theorie,

  2. het zwembad

  3. en het ‘buitenwater’.

De theorie behandelt het freedive specifieke materiaal, wat eenvoudige natuurkunde en waar je als je gaat freediven mee te maken krijgt en een heleboel veiligheidsinformatie. In het zwembad krijg je vooral het onderdeel zwemmen onderwater met de juiste freediving technieken, die je later verticaal ook in de diepte gaat toepassen. Het diepe deel doen we vaak in het prachtige bad van Dive4life in Siegburg Duitsland (www.dive4life.de). De maximale diepte is 20 meter en het doel is om comfortabel naar 10 meter te kunnen. Dit bouwen we natuurlijk heel rustig op.

Woensdagcursussen meest gebruikte lokaties:

We starten elke cursus met de theorie bij onze samenwerkingspartner Cressi in Haarlem op de A.Hofmanweg 1A (Waarderpolder). De plattegrond voor de entree staat hier rechts naast, derde plaatje. Inloop en mogelijkheid tot kopen of bestellen van materiaal van 18.00 – 18.30 uur waarna we starten met de theorie. Na de theorie gaan we naar zwembad De Sporthoeve, Snelliuslaan 1 Badhoevedorp. Hier sluiten we af.

Weekendcursussen:

We starten elke vrijdagavond met de theorie bij onze samenwerkingspartner The Wave in Hillegom, Marconistraat 9B. Inloop 18.15 uur, start theorie om 18.30 uur. Vrijdagavond gebruiken we hier ook het zwembad. Zaterdag start we bij Cressi in Haarlem op de A.Hofmanweg 1A (Waarderpolder). De plattegrond voor de entree staat hier rechts naast, derde plaatje. Na de theorie gaan we naar zwembad De Sporthoeve, Snelliuslaan 1 Badhoevedorp.

LET OP: Met de huidige maatregelen van de regering kan er in Duitsland om je QR code gevraagd worden. Als je je inschrijft voor de cursus gaan we er van uit dat je hier rekening mee hebt gehouden.

 

Vereisten:

Je dient in het bezit te zijn van een duikmedische keuring niet ouder dan een jaar. Indien je vaker hebt gedoken en weet dat je compleet gezond bent kun je volstaan met het invullen van een medische verklaring van gezondheid op je dossier. Deelname vanaf 14 jaar met ouderlijke toestemming.

*Euro 395,- excl. entree Dive4life en inclusief overige zwembadentree, digitale studentenkit en gebruik van basisuitrusting als vinnen (indien je maat aanwezig is), masker, snorkel en loodgordel, een digitaal brevet en de administratiekosten van SSI.

Kom je van een andere SSI freediveschool of heb je je opleiding in het buitenland niet afgemaakt? Dan kun je de dieptedag in Dive4life meedoen om je brevet af te ronden. De kosten zijn vanaf een poolbrevet Euro 165,- voor de hele dag cursus en digitaal brevet en excl. de entree voor Dive4life.

Euro 295,- voor het poolbrevet zonder de dieptedag.

Meebrengen?

  • Grote dosis enthousiasme en nieuwsgierigheid

  • zwemkleding

  • grote handdoek om op te liggen met de ontspanningsoefeningen

  • masker, snorkel, 3 a 4 kilo lood in zo klein mogelijke blokken, loodgordel (ook te leen dus)

  • handig, maar niet noodzakelijk, een (duik)horloge met secondewijzer en voor het eerste half uur van les 2 en 3 een pak (surf-, duik-, freedivepak of hesje)

Brevettering pool brevet of level 1?

Aan het eind van de cursus krijg je een digitaal brevet. Het kan zijn dat je niet goed kon klaren of dat er een andere reden was waarom je de vereiste diepten niet hebt kunnen halen. Je krijgt dan aan het eind van de cursus, mits je aan alle eisen hebt voldaan, je pool (Zwembad) brevet. Je kunt deze altijd weer upgraden als je hebt geoefend en je alsnog aan de level 1 breveteisen kunt voldoen. Je mag dan de Dive4life dag nog eens mee, als er plaats is voor je, en dan checken we al je skills. Een upgrade kan ook eventueel bij andere SSI Freedive scholen voor als je besluit het brevet af te maken in het buitenland.

Also we do a swimming pool training were we teach and practice breathing for a longer breath hold and to get more confident when you get held down by a wave.
